Also, if there is a policy against "large groups", will you kindly prominently post this policy, making it clear what exact number constitutes a "large group".
Sympathize with complaints about the noise level but all libraries have this problem today. Over 20 years of using the Pearland library system and I am delighted with the Westside facility. The staff is always helpful and courteous. I don't like to look up books on the computer and never has any librarian refused to help me. Although the books tend to focus on the popular, I often find fascinating volumes when I browse the stacks.
Its been brought to the attention of thousands from a facebook post that a librarian by the name of "Katy" turned away about 10 African American children from having story time with her because as she put it she couldn't have story time with a group if kids. A library is public place & if story time is there for the children then no child should be turned away. It's really disgusting that this woman would subject those innocent babies to any form of racism because that's what it was. There was a call placed to the library before taking the children up there to participate in story time & they were told it was okay to bring the 10 children. This group of children were well behaved & chaperoned by adults & the only thing they wanted was to hear a story like the other 7 children that were there. The chaperone was forced to take the children to another area to conduct story time for them. The children wanted to know why they had to leave & why they couldn't hear the story that the other 7 children were going to hear. How do you explain this bahavior to children ages 4 to 6? They don't understand racism & they shouldn't have to! This behavior needs to be addressed. Its unacceptable, its disgusting & it won't be tolerated.
SAD STORY!! There is a bigot working at the Westside Library in Pearland. She turned away a group of ten , adorable, well-behaved African-American children who came for story time this morning. They were accompanied by three adults. They sat quietly in the story time area and awaited the arrival of the library employee who, in a nasty tone, asked them. "Are you all a day care?" She was told that they were a camp. She told them they had to leave the story time area since "large groups " are not allowed. As the puzzled children( ranging in age from 4 to 6) asked why they could not hear the story too, they were ushered away by their chaperones , who conducted a SEPARATE BUT EQUAL STORY TIME in another section of the library. The employee conducted story time for SEVEN CHILDREN! Why she could not read to ALL 17 children is beyond me. I went to the library and asked her to clarify what the "LIMIT" is for story time. She responded, "We have a policy hat we don't allow large groups." She never gave me a number. When I asked her if this "policy" that she referred to was in WRITiNG, she claimed that she would "have to check". I informed her that two of the three chaperones are tax-paying Pearlanders who called the Tom Reid library on the East side to ask if they could bring their "small camp" there for story time. Spoken to by a much more welcoming Pearlander, they were told "yes" because the area can accommodate 75 children. I promised "Katy" that I would give her the exposure that she rightfully deserves. A PUBLIC library is for the PUBLIC. Her "private" feelings about which children should enjoy LITERACY should only be reflected in her behavior at a "private" business. I ask you to join me in sharing this with anyone who resides in Pearland who cares about equality. I urge you to call and email the library to make your outrage known. If my memory serves me correctly, GROUPS of children have ALWAYS gone to the library. As much as I HATE to have to type this, I will call a spade a spade. There is no way that cultured, self-respecting people will EVER rationalize bigotry.
I also find the system is very good at sending books to the branch when they are in another Brazoria library's collection.. I visit the library every other week and I think it is terrific.
Why would children be turned away from story time? These children were well behaved and ranged in the ages of 4-6. Thanks Westside Library and Katy for giving these children their introduction to racism. They were bound to experience it sooner or later and thanks to you, it was sooner.
I visited this branch to pick up a book that my son reserved. They sent an email letting us know the book had arrived. The staff member who assisted me was very helpful and pleasant.
